Computer Skills to Start With: Windows, Office and Typing

Almost every job and every online course assumes a few basic computer skills. If you are starting from the beginning, it helps to learn them in a sensible order rather than all at once.

Start with the operating system. Learn how to create, name, copy and move files and folders, how to find a file you saved last week, and how to install and remove programs safely. These small habits save a lot of time and prevent lost work.

Then learn to type comfortably. You do not need extreme speed, but typing without looking for every key makes everything else faster, whether you are writing a report or filling in a form. Short daily practice for a few weeks is usually enough to see a difference.

Next, the office programs. In a word processor learn headings, lists, tables and page setup. In a spreadsheet learn how to enter data neatly, use simple formulas such as sum and average, and sort and filter. In a presentation tool learn to build clear slides with little text and good images. These three cover most everyday office work.

Do not skip online safety. Use strong and different passwords, be careful with links and attachments from people you do not know, keep your software updated, and back up important files. Good habits here protect your work and your personal information.
